This is the now famous Penn State Golf Course Bench that was "relocated"
by me & two of my Delta Chi fraternity brothers, Don Luckenbill & Bruce
Muzina, in the winter of 1964, for use as a prop at a Pledge Formal. The
bench was "relocated" back a couple of years later, after having been
recognized in our environs by the Golf Coach of a then-pledge named Jim Gieger.
In what would otherwise have been a totally unrelated story, I came across Col. Vince Gieger
in my search for men of my Father's 75th Infantry Division. Vince, it turns out, knew my Father
well, as they were young Lieutenants together at Fort Leonard Wood and later at camp Breckenridge.
They were also both engaged to Pittsburgh girls named Betty.
When Vince and I first talked, and I suggested a visit -- as I was coming back East for my daughter
Lindsey's graduation from Penn State, Vince said "Penn State . . . my son went to Penn State. Later,
when Vince said he ran a golf course outside Pittsburgh, we both put it together. Vince's son
Jim, because he was on the golf team, drew a visit from his coach, who discovered the bench above.
